High temperature applications such as for wood stove glass or fireplace glass requires the use of temperature resistant glass. Two types of glass are commonly used for their heat resistant qualities are tempered glass and ceramic glass (NeoCeram Glass®). Your selection will be based on the heat exposure of the glass.
Stained glass projects for beginners are art projects that involve creating a decorative piece of art using colored glass pieces and lead or copper strips. These projects are often suitable for individuals who are new to working with stained glass or who have limited experience with glass crafting.
Beginner stained glass projects can range from simple designs such as sun catchers or small decorative panels to more complex designs such as lampshades or window inserts. Many beginner projects come with pre-cut glass pieces and patterns to make the process easier for beginners.
Tempered Glass can withstand constant temperatures of up to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Tempered glass is suitable for fireplace glass where the fire is not near the glass. When tempered glass is exposed to sustained temperatures of greater than 470 degrees F, the structure of the glass gradually weakens. Exposure to temperatures of 600 degrees F or higher can cause tempered glass to shatter into small pieces.
Ceramic Glass is commonly sold under the brand names of NeoCeram(R), PyroCeram(R) and Robax(R). Ceramic glass is actually not a glass, but is a transparent ceramic that can withstand continuous temperatures of up to 1265 degrees Fahrenheit. Ceramic glass has near zero thermal expansion which makes it very resistant to thermal shattering.
This make ceramic glass ideal for use as woodstove glass, wood pellet stove glassand coal burning stove glass or in fireplaces where the glass panels are located less than 6 inches from the flame. Ceramic glass is also used in cooktops and industrial applications.
For temperature resistant glass, tempered glass is used as a less expensive alternative to ceramic glass. For continuous exposure to high heat such as in woodstove glass, ceramic glass is best choice.
